How to Water Your Sun City Lawn Right

August 2026

If you've lived in Sun City for more than a season, you already know: the watering restrictions here aren't just a drought-year thing. Georgetown Utility Systems, which serves Sun City, assigns your watering day by the last digit of your address — 1, 5, or 9 waters Tuesday or Friday; 2, 4, 6, or 8 waters Wednesday or Saturday; 0, 3, or 7 waters Thursday or Sunday — never on Mondays, and never between 9am and 7pm. Whether that's one or two days a week depends on the current drought stage, so it's worth a quick check of GUS's schedule page if you haven't looked lately. Low-output watering (hand-held hose, watering can) is allowed any day.

That changes the strategy. With only one or two chances a week, a light daily sprinkle isn't an option anymore even if it were allowed — and it was never the right approach anyway. Shallow, frequent watering trains grass roots to stay near the surface, which makes the lawn more heat-stressed and more dependent on water, not less. Deep, infrequent watering pushes roots down where the soil stays cooler and holds moisture longer.

In practice: on your watering day, run enough time to get water down 6 to 8 inches rather than splitting a short cycle across the week. A screwdriver pushed into the soil after watering will tell you how far it soaked — if it stops easily at 6+ inches, you got there.

Watering before 9am (or after 7pm, since both are outside the restricted window) cuts down how much you lose to evaporation and midday heat, so more of what you put down actually reaches the roots instead of the air.

The easiest way to tell if you're behind: walk across the lawn. If footprints stay pressed into the grass instead of springing back up within a few minutes, the lawn is telling you it needs water before your next scheduled day, not after.

Mowing height matters here too — grass kept at the right height (not scalped) shades its own soil and holds moisture longer between waterings, which is one more reason cut height isn't just cosmetic. Our Lawn Mowing service keeps height consistent through the season for exactly this reason. Request a quote and we'll build the schedule around your address's actual watering day.
